James P. Rector serves as Associate General Counsel at West Virginia University. As an Associate General Counsel, James provides legal services in several areas, including constitutional law, contracts, litigation, real estate, construction, student conduct, and Freedom of Information Act requests.
Prior to joining WVU, James was a litigator at Steptoe & Johnson PLLC, an NLJ Top 250 law firm. At Steptoe & Johnson, James focused his practice on general civil litigation, energy litigation, and complex real estate litigation, representing clients in the Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000.
James obtained a Juris Doctorate from WVU College of Law in 2014 and a Bachelor of Science in International Politics from The George Washington University in 2006. While in law school he was selected as a member of the Moot Court National Team and served as a Dean’s Fellow in the Academic Excellence Program.
James resides in Morgantown and enjoys playing music in his spare time.
