James P. Rector serves as Associate General Counsel at West Virginia University. As an Associate General Counsel, James provides legal services in several areas, including: contracts, litigation, real estate, student conduct, trademark and copyright, and Freedom of Information Act requests.
Prior to joining WVU, James was a litigator at Steptoe & Johnson PLLC, an NLJ Top 250 law firm. At Steptoe & Johnson, James focused his practice on general civil litigation, energy litigation, and complex real estate litigation, representing clients in the Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000.
James obtained a Juris Doctorate from WVU College of Law in 2014 and a Bachelor of Science in International Politics from The George Washington University in 2006. While in law school he was selected as a member of the Moot Court National Team and served as a Dean’s Fellow in the Academic Excellence Program.
James resides in Morgantown and enjoys playing music in his spare time.
