Gary Furbee serves as Deputy General Counsel at West Virginia University. As a Deputy General Counsel, Gary works closely with the University’s senior leadership by providing legal services in a wide range of practice areas, including real estate, athletics, business transactions, policy development, and litigation management. Gary previously served as Interim General Counsel in 2015-2016.
In 2019, Gary assumed additional responsibility over the University’s leasing and land transactions. These administrative responsibilities were further expanded in 2020 to include oversight of WVU Property Management, including University Apartments.
Before joining the WVU Office of General Counsel in 2008, Gary was State Counsel for Old Republic National Title Insurance Company where he provided corporate counsel and underwriting support to a statewide network of title agents. Prior to his work with Old Republic, Gary worked within the University’s Division of Student Life and maintained a private practice.
A native of Fairmont, West Virginia, Gary received his Juris Doctorate from the WVU College of Law in 2003 and his undergraduate degree in Political Science from WVU in 1999. He is an Eagle Scout and an active supporter and volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America. Gary resides in the Morgantown area with his wife and their two sons.
