Gary Furbee serves as Deputy General Counsel and Associate Vice President of Real Estate Operations. Gary assists in representing the interests of the University’s executive and senior leadership by providing legal services, transactional support, policy development, and strategic planning. In addition to his legal duties, Gary oversees the University’s real estate operations, ensuring efficient management of the institution’s land and property assets, including the University's commercial properties and residential apartment communities known as University Apartments.
Gary is a lawyer and higher education administrator with extensive experience in legal affairs and real estate operations. Since joining the University in 2008, Gary has consistently been trusted with increasing levels of responsibility. Through the years, he has demonstrated strong leadership and strategic vision when providing critical legal guidance across multiple areas of university operations, including a tenure as interim general counsel.
In 2024, Gary was promoted to Deputy General Counsel and Associate Vice President of Real Estate Operations. In this dual role, he continues to provide legal oversight while leading strategic real estate initiatives that align with the university’s long-term goals.
A native of Fairmont, West Virginia, Gary is a WVU graduate with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a juris doctorate. He is an Eagle Scout and remains an active volunteer for the Scouting America Mountaineer Area Council on special projects and as an assistant scoutmaster with Troop 52.
