Brent P. Copenhaver serves as Deputy General Counsel for the Health Sciences at West Virginia University. As Deputy General Counsel for Health Sciences, Brent works closely with the University’s senior leadership at the Health Sciences Center and provides legal services to the five schools that comprise the HSC in a wide range of practice areas, including: medical malpractice litigation management, healthcare compliance and regulation, employment issues, conflicts of interest and conflicts of commitment, matters involving the Office of Graduate Medical Education, and academic and professionalism issues involving students and medical residents.
Prior to joining WVU in 2014, Brent spent almost all of his career in private practice in the specialty of the defense of medical malpractice and hospital negligence cases, having tried many cases in courts in West Virginia and Ohio.
He received a B.A. in Economics from Denison University in
1983. In 1987, he received his M.B.A.
from the West Virginia University College of Business and Economics and his
J.D. from the West Virginia University College of Law. Brent is licensed to practice law in West
Virginia and Ohio..
