Gary Furbee serves as Deputy General Counsel and Executive Director of Real Estate Operations at West Virginia University. Gary assists the General Counsel in representing the interests of the University’s executive and senior leadership by providing legal services, transactional support, policy development, and strategic planning. Gary is also responsible for the oversight and management of WVU's real estate operations.

Gary first joined the Office of General Counsel in 2002 while in law school as a graduate assistant. He returned to the office in 2008 as an assistant general counsel and has steadily taken on more leadership responsibilities within the office and the University.

In September of 2015, Gary was appointed as WVU’s interim general counsel. He served in that role until February 2016.

Beginning in 2019, Gary began managing WVU’s leasing and land transactions. His administrative responsibilities were further expanded in 2020 to include oversight of the remainder of WVU’s real estate operations, including management of the University's commercial properties and residential apartment communities known as University Apartments.

Before returning to the WVU Office of General Counsel in 2008, Gary was a lawyer with Berryman Law Offices; served as the attorney for students within WVU Student Life; and was employed as state counsel by Old Republic National Title Insurance Company.

A native of Fairmont, West Virginia, Gary is a WVU graduate with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a juris doctorate. He is an Eagle Scout and remains an active volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America where he currently serves as an assistant scoutmaster with Troop 52.

Gary and his wife, Denise, reside in the Morgantown area with their two sons.
